SAFETY & WHAT TO EXPECT
🛼 Safety First — No Exceptions
Safety is our top priority. Skating in Austin involves streets, trails, and mixed conditions — so we expect everyone to follow these rules every ride.
Wear protection: helmet strongly encouraged; wrist guards, knee/elbow pads recommended
Lights & visibility: use lights and reflective gear for night skates
Stay alert: watch for cars, cyclists, pedestrians, and obstacles
Know your limits: don't push beyond your ability
Falls happen — but proper gear and awareness dramatically reduce injury risk. (source: orthoinfo.aaos.org)
🚦 Skating in Austin (Traffic & Trails)
We skate in real-world environments. That means:
Obey traffic laws (stop signs, lights, right-of-way)
Yield to pedestrians, especially on trails
Do NOT assume drivers see you
Call out hazards (holes, gravel, glass, cars) to the group
Staying predictable and communicating clearly helps prevent collisions and keeps everyone safer. (source: rollerlandskatecenter.com)
📣 Communication Matters
Group skating depends on communication.
Call out: "Car up," "Stopping," "Hole," "Left," "Right"
Avoid headphones — they block awareness and group signals
Keep your head up and scan ahead
Good communication keeps the group connected and reduces risk.
👥 Group Riding Expectations
We skate as a group — not a race.
Stay behind the lead skater
Avoid splitting the group
Maintain a safe following distance
Be mindful of your stride and the space around you
Anything that separates the group increases risk. Staying together improves safety.
🎶 Music Etiquette
Keep speakers at a reasonable volume
Be respectful — music preferences vary
Avoid competing loud speakers
We want a fun vibe without distractions.
🗓️ How a Typical Meetup Works
Meet at the designated spot (parking area, park, etc.)
Gear up and check in
Brief safety talk + introductions
Rollout, led by a designated lead skater
Midpoint stop (usually social / rest / water break)
Return to the start location
Leads plan routes ahead of time and aim for stopping points that are skate-friendly.
☀️ Weather Policy
Skates may be canceled or delayed due to rain or unsafe conditions
Wet pavement increases fall risk
Check our social channels for updates before heading out
🎒 What to Bring
Helmet and pads
Lights (front and rear)
Water (very important in Austin heat)
Small backpack (optional)
Basic skate tool (recommended)
Hydration is critical — skating in heat can lead to dehydration quickly. (source: orthoinfo.aaos.org)
🔧 If You Can't Finish
We support each other:
The group will stop for falls or quick repairs
If you need to leave early, we'll help you find a safe exit
That said, please come prepared:
Know the route (shared beforehand when possible) or ask for a location share
Have a phone and a ride-share backup if needed
🍻 Midpoint Stops
Many routes include a social midpoint.
Could be a brewery, coffee shop, or park
Be flexible — locations vary
Respect venues and local rules
👨👩👧 Who Can Join?
Generally 18+, or minors with a parent/guardian present
All skill levels welcome depending on event type
Some rides may be labeled:
Beginner-friendly
Intermediate
Advanced / distance
🧠 Final Reminders
Skating is inherently risky — you participate at your own risk
Respect others, the city, and the environment
Look out for each other — this is a community
💬 Our Goal
We're here to:
Build community
Explore Austin on wheels
Stay safe while having fun
